My best memories from childhood are of the times I spent in the woods with my mom, during the summers we spent in the Catskill Mountains. She showed me where to look for fairy rings, and how to catch frogs and salamanders, and how to find things that are hidden to most people, like the Indian pipe flowers that grow under pine trees, and rare lady’s slipper orchids at the edge of the forest…
Out of that experience, I began a class in the park for families with young children to cultivate a similar appreciation for nature, and all it offers the young child. I believe that children need to be outdoors as much as possible — they learn to be resourceful and to collaborate, and they develop dexterity and skill in observing the world around them. They live in their limbs, and learn with their heart, mind and spirit.
This forest kindergarten is for families who are really committed to the idea that an outdoor, play-based class is ideal for their child. We will hold class throughout the school year, in all but the most inclement weather. (There is a possibility that we will secure a space for use during the coldest months, and in conditions where outdoor play is not advisable.)
This class is for children 3 - 6-years-old. Children must be potty-trained to attend.
We offer a five-day program, Monday - Friday, and also a three-day program on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 9 a.m. to 1p.m. Options for a 2-day program can be discussed and scheduled!
We will meet at the entrance to Prospect Park at Lincoln Rd.
Children need to carry their own backpacks with sunscreen, when appropriate, and a water bottle. You may include a small snack and a lunch that can withstand a bit of time out of the refrigerator-- we will provide apples and another hearty snack for the children.
We are offering classes by semester:
Fall: Sept. 10 - Dec. 23 (15 weeks)
Winter: January and February will be offered on a weekly basis, depending on the weather. Some classes may be on zoom.
Spring: March 1 - June 25 (17 weeks)
